Northern Territory Vehicle Sale Requirements

At $18 the Northern Territory has the cheapest vehicle transfer fee in Australia, and with no roadworthy inspection required the process is about as light as it gets. Duty is $3 per $100 of market value and the Motor Vehicle Registry handles the transfer.

What is genuinely different here is the condition vehicles are in and how far they have travelled. Territory cars work harder than their odometers suggest — corrugated road surfaces, wet-season flooding, salt air along the coast and long unsealed runs to remote communities all leave marks that a low reading does not capture. A buyer treating an NT vehicle purely on kilometres is reading the wrong number, and with no mandatory inspection there is no independent report to correct that impression.

This puts unusual weight on the written record. Describing the vehicle accurately, recording the odometer, and stating plainly whether it is sold as-is is what separates a clean private sale from an argument about whether known faults were disclosed. Where a vehicle has spent time on unsealed roads or in a flood-affected area, saying so in the document protects the seller as much as it informs the buyer.

Distances also mean sight-unseen purchases are more common than in the southern capitals, with buyers in Alice Springs or Katherine committing to vehicles in Darwin before inspecting them. A PPSR check is the one safeguard that works regardless of distance. It is a national register and reveals whether a secured debt is registered against the vehicle — a debt that follows the car, not the seller.

Include both parties' full names and addresses, the registration and VIN, the odometer reading on the day of sale, the agreed price, the date and both signatures, and keep a copy each. Darwin and Palmerston account for most private-sale activity in the Territory.
