Additional Forms Required in Iowa
- Form 411007 (Application for Certificate of Title)
Iowa DOT requires a bill of sale for private party vehicle transactions. Unlike a common misconception, Iowa does NOT require the bill of sale to be notarized β both buyer and seller simply need to sign, and retaining copies is strongly recommended.
Iowa charges a 5% use tax on vehicle purchases, paid at the county treasurer's office during the title transfer process. The buyer has 30 days to complete the transfer using Form 411007 (Application for Certificate of Title).
Iowa also requires a damage disclosure statement for vehicles that have sustained significant damage. This statement must accompany the bill of sale during the title transfer process. Both parties should retain copies of all documents for their records.
