Tasmania has the smallest private vehicle market in the country, and that shapes how sales actually happen here. Stock is thinner than on the mainland, so buyers routinely look interstate — and a vehicle bought in Victoria and shipped across Bass Strait carries paperwork complications that an intra-state sale does not. Getting the sale document right at the point of purchase matters more when the seller will shortly be several hundred kilometres and one ocean away.

For a sale within Tasmania the process is straightforward. No roadworthy inspection is required, duty is charged at $3 per $100 of market value, and the transfer fee is $37.48. Service Tasmania handles the registration transfer.

The absence of a mandatory inspection is worth understanding rather than simply enjoying. It means no independent party has recorded the vehicle's condition, so the only account of what was represented — mileage, known faults, whether it was sold as-is — is the document the two parties signed. For an interstate purchase where the buyer inspected briefly or not at all, that record is the entire basis for resolving a later disagreement.

A PPSR check is the other safeguard, and it is national rather than state-based, so it works identically whether the car is in Launceston or was bought in Melbourne. It reveals any secured debt registered against the vehicle. That debt follows the car, which means a buyer can pay the full price and still face repossession over a loan the seller never mentioned.

Include both parties' full names and addresses, the registration and VIN, the odometer reading, the agreed price, the date and both signatures, and keep a copy each. Hobart and Launceston carry most of the state's private-sale volume, with Devonport and Burnie active along the north-west coast.
