Alaska Odometer Disclosure Bill of Sale Requirements
Alaska DMV does not require a bill of sale for title transfer — the assigned title is the operative ownership document — but a bill of sale is strongly recommended. Buyers must apply for title in their name within 30 days of purchase. Alaska has no state sales tax (some municipalities levy local tax). Source: Alaska DMV.
Alaska is one of the few states with no state sales tax, making private vehicle sales potentially more affordable. A bill of sale is required for all motor vehicle transfers and serves as proof of the transaction between private parties.
While Alaska does not require notarization of the bill of sale, having the document notarized adds an extra layer of legal protection for both parties. The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles recommends including the vehicle identification number (VIN), sale price, and complete contact information for both buyer and seller.
Buyers must complete the title transfer within 30 days at a local DMV office. Alaska requires a Vehicle Transaction Application to be submitted with the bill of sale and signed title.
