South Australia Vehicle Sale Requirements

South Australia is the one state where you cannot work out the duty from a single rate. SA uses a tiered structure — from $1 to $4 per $100 depending on the value of the vehicle — rather than the flat per-$100 charge used in Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, or the straight percentage used in Western Australia. A buyer estimating costs from a mate's experience with a cheaper car will get the number wrong, because the rate itself moves with the price band.

No roadworthy inspection is required for a private sale between SA residents. That makes the transaction faster than a Victorian or Queensland sale, and it also means nothing independently documents the vehicle's condition at handover. The sale record carries that weight on its own.

Because the duty is banded, the price on the document has more consequence here than sellers often realise. Understating it does not lower the assessment — Service SA works from market value — but it does create a record that disagrees with the assessed figure, which is exactly the kind of inconsistency that turns a routine counter transaction into a slow one.

What to include: both parties' full names and addresses, the registration and VIN, the odometer reading on the day of sale, the agreed price, the date, and signatures from both sides. Add the transfer fee of $38 to the buyer's costs alongside the duty.

Run a PPSR check before money changes hands. It tells the buyer whether a secured debt is registered against the vehicle, and that debt stays with the car rather than the seller — a buyer who pays in full for an encumbered vehicle can still lose it. Adelaide accounts for most private-sale activity in the state, with steady volume through the Fleurieu, Barossa and Mount Gambier.
