- Vehicle Application (Form DPSMV 1799)
Louisiana requires an Act of Sale (bill of sale) for all private party vehicle transactions. The state charges a 4.45% state sales tax, with additional parish and local taxes that can vary significantly by location.
The buyer has 40 days to transfer the title at a Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) office. Required documents include the signed bill of sale, vehicle title, Form DPSMV 1799, and valid identification.
Notarization IS required β either the title assignment must be notarized or an original notarized bill of sale/invoice must accompany the transfer package. Louisiana law also encourages the seller to report the sale to the OMV to release liability for the vehicle.
