- Application for Title (Form MVT-2)
Maine requires a bill of sale for all vehicle transactions. Maine is phasing titling coverage backward: as of January 1, 2026, vehicles with a model year of 2001 or newer must have a title, and the cutoff advances one model year each January. Vehicles older than the cutoff continue to use the bill of sale as the primary ownership document.
Maine charges a 5.5% sales tax on vehicle purchases. The buyer must complete the registration and title transfer within 30 days at a Maine BMV office or through a municipal agent. Form MVT-2 is required for title applications.
Both parties should sign the bill of sale and retain copies. For older vehicles without titles, it is especially important to include detailed vehicle information and have the document notarized for added legal protection.
