Michigan requires a bill of sale for all private party vehicle transactions. The state has a 15-day window for the buyer to complete the title transfer at a Secretary of State branch office.
Michigan charges a 6% sales tax on vehicle purchases. The buyer pays this tax when applying for a new title using Form TR-11 (Application for Michigan Vehicle Title). The seller is also required to report the sale to the Secretary of State.
Notarization is not required in Michigan, but both the buyer and seller must sign the bill of sale. The seller should complete the assignment section on the back of the title and provide it to the buyer at the time of sale.
