Is notarization required on a New Jersey vehicle bill of sale?
No. New Jersey does not require a vehicle bill of sale to be notarized; notarization applies only to a seller statement for a vehicle from a state that issues no titles, or a Power of Attorney. Both the seller and the buyer should still sign it.
What happens if I miss the 10-working-day title transfer deadline?
The MVC charges a $25 penalty. Contact an MVC agency as soon as possible if you have missed the 10-working-day window.
Does my vehicle need an emissions test in New Jersey?
It depends on the vehicle. Most gasoline-powered vehicles aged 5 years or older require periodic emissions testing. Electric vehicles and some newer vehicles are exempt. Check the NJ MVC website for the current schedule based on your vehicle's model year.
Do we need more than one printed copy?
Print at least two signed copies — one for the buyer and one for the seller to retain as a record of the sale.
Can I transfer a New Jersey vehicle title online?
No. Private-party title transfers require an in-person visit to an NJ MVC agency. Bring the assigned title, completed title application, and payment for the sales tax and fees.
