Is notarization required on a Missouri vehicle bill of sale?
Not for an ordinary private sale. Signatures from both parties are sufficient, and the title signatures need no notary either. The Form 1957 bill of sale must be notarized only when it proves ownership of major component parts of a rebuilt vehicle or when DOR specifically requests it.
What is Missouri Form 5049 and where do I get it?
Form 5049 is the Notice of Sale. The seller files it, or Form 1957 (Bill of Sale), to report the sale to Missouri DOR within 30 days. It is available on the Missouri DOR website.
Does every county in Missouri require emissions testing?
No. Emissions inspections are only required in certain Missouri counties — primarily the St. Louis metropolitan area. Safety inspections, however, are required statewide.
Who keeps which copies afterward?
Print at least two copies. The buyer keeps one copy with the title paperwork, and the seller retains one copy as proof of sale.
Can the buyer drive the vehicle home before getting it inspected?
Yes. Missouri allows a reasonable period for the buyer to drive the vehicle to an inspection station. However, registration cannot be completed until a passing safety inspection certificate is obtained.
