A general vehicle bill of sale works for any motorized vehicle transaction — cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, or any road vehicle not covered by a specialized form. It captures the essential details that all 50 state DMVs require for title transfer: seller and buyer identification, vehicle VIN, odometer reading, sale price, and condition.

When to Use This Form

Use the general vehicle bill of sale when selling or buying a privately-owned motor vehicle and no state-specific form is mandatory. It is also suitable when the vehicle type does not fit neatly into car, motorcycle, or other dedicated categories.

Legal Tip

Always record the exact VIN (17 characters) as shown on the dashboard plate. A single digit error can delay or void a title transfer. Both parties should sign two copies.

Most states require a bill of sale for private vehicle sales, but the format requirements vary. Some states have their own official forms; others accept any written bill of sale that includes the required fields.
What is the difference between a vehicle bill of sale and a car title?
The bill of sale is the private contract between buyer and seller documenting the terms of the sale. The title is the government-issued document proving legal ownership. You need the bill of sale to transfer the title.
Does a vehicle bill of sale need to be notarized?
Most states do not require notarization for a vehicle bill of sale, and the exceptions are narrower than commonly listed. North Dakota’s official form is itself notarized; Louisiana accepts either a notarized title assignment or a notarized bill of sale; West Virginia requires one only when the price is well below book value; and in Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Oklahoma the notarization attaches to the title assignment instead.
